My schedule is quite full and without much flexibility to reschedule or honor make up lessons. However, each tuition student will be granted up to 2 make up credits over the school year that will be applied toward their summer lessons. Make up credits will be granted for planned absences or extenuation circumstances. Please notify me of schedule changes at least 24 hours in advance. Last minute cancellations or no-shows will be charged or not made up. Keep in mind that last minute cancellations prevent me from filling the lesson time with another potential rescheduled lesson.
Rescheduling
If a lesson is cancelled, that slot will be made open to others. Please check the online calendar through your MyMusicStaff portal if you have a conflict and need to reschedule your lesson.
Online Lessons
Digital lessons are a good option for inclement weather, transportation issues, and illness.
The piano and commonly touched surfaces will be wiped down at the end of each day. Students should use hand sanitizer or wash hands before their lesson. Masks are at the student’s discretion. Should a student catch a cold or a member of their household have a more serious illness, I will happily switch to an online lesson.
Becoming a proficient pianist will not occur simply by going to piano lessons. It takes practice (avg. 1.5-4 hrs/week) to put into motion the concepts covered at the lesson. I work to educate, inspire, and encourage a student to develop long lasting practice habits, but ultimately it is the student’s choice to practice. The more time spent practicing, the more noticeable the improvement and the more fulfilling the lesson experience. Chronic lack of practice results in minimal improvement, stagnation in lessons, and a loss of interest.
As with most activities, appropriate equipment is essential to success. Students are more motivated to practice if their home instrument is similar to the studio instrument and if it is located in a quiet practice space. I recommend that each student practices on an acoustic piano. If this is not feasible, an electronic piano (full length and weighted keys with pedal) is acceptable. A metronome or metronome app is required.
Parents are essential to a student’s success—especially with beginners. Young students will need a parent to sit with them and help them with their practice. As that student develops more independent practice habits, they will require less hands on help. Parents are welcome to observe lessons so they can best know how to support their child’s home practice.
